ABSTRACT

Following the hour-long parent group, the parents and children come together for a 30-min parent-child learning activity session. The purpose of these sessions is to facilitate the development of more positive parent-child interactions. The content of the sessions varies, but it is generally tied to the content of the parent group session. For example, in the first part of the school year, a number of parent-child activities involve parents and children sharing books. Not only do such activities follow from the parent group discussions on learning and school success, but they also complement the reading tutoring component, which is primarily phonics-based, by employing a whole-language approach to reading. It is also during the parent-child activity time that much of the behavioral rehearsal arid practice activities occur that are thought to be necessary to increase the likelihood of generalization of the parenting skills to the home. Throughout the year, games that are tied to material covered in the parent group, children's friendship group, and/or PATHS are also presented.
