ABSTRACT

The Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) movement was initiated at a small conference held in Dayton, Ohio in 1989. Thirty researchers attended that meeting, trying to find some common themes for research programs that up to that point had been conducted in parallel. They succeeded in identifying shared interests and approaches. Over a hundred researchers attended the second conference in 1994, and more than 400 are members of a new human factors technical group on cognitive engineering and decision making that was started in 1995. The third NDM conference was held in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1996 and plans have been made for a regular series.
