Error Management: a Cultural Universal in Aviation and Medicine
We have discussed how the three cultures, professional, national and organizational, influence attitudes and values about work. In this chapter we discuss how these cultures intersect within organizations and can be channeled toward a safety culture. We suggest error management as an essential strategy for achieving a safety culture and describe the need for empirical data to diagnose an organization's health and practices. After considering methodological approaches, we discuss findings from research into crew behavior. We conclude with a discussion of culture and error management in medicine.
