ABSTRACT
Heritage-based tourism offers intriguing, and often compelling, opportunities for developing industries and markets, as well as policies to promote such developments. Governments have long histories of undertaking policies that affect heritage industries and the cultural resources of a society. These policies may have direct or indirect effects on heritage resources, and these effects may serve to enhance or undermine those industries and resources. Table 18.1 offers some examples for the United States.
