ABSTRACT

No person usually takes a risk with the belief of imminent failure. Tourism businesses regularly face risks from which they may benefit or they may lose. This study builds upon two previous studies of the risk management strategies of outdoor education and recreation organisations, using an online survey to explore the risk management strategies used by tourism businesses in a coastal region of New South Wales, Australia. Themes explored in this study included potential risks for organisations; risk management planning for broad areas of risk: natural disasters, business downturn, staffing problems, business environment changes, and building and equipment failures; sources of information for risk management planning; learning from serious incidents; and future training and development opportunities. The Risk Management Standard provides the framework for the research design and the presentation of the survey results.
