ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the techniques briefly and indicates some uses. It discusses main techniques: Synectics, Attribute listing, Forced relationships, Morphological analysis, Lateral thinking and PO Check lists. PO can be used as a way out of a difficult or impossible situation. A synectics group consists of a leader, a client and about six participants. The leader is responsible for running the session and for recording all the ideas produced on sheets of newsprint. Forced relationships technique takes objects or ideas and asks the question: 'If these were combined, what new object or idea would be produced?' Morphological analysis technique is similar to attribute listing. It takes all the possible variables to a problem and seeks to combine them in new ways. Check lists technique builds lists to stimulate ideas, or to prevent them being forgotten. One well-known check list is Osborn's generalised check list, developed by Alex F. Osborn.
