ABSTRACT

Mining companies are beginning to respond to these accelerating social and environmental concerns via incorporating the notion of corporate social responsibility in their business practices. This chapter explores the case study of Aldanzoloto, although the largest gold mining company in the region, a declining mining sector. It presents a case study of ALROSA, the largest diamond mining company in the Republic of Sakha and a growing mining sector. The chapter also presents a comparison of environmental and social strategies between Aldanzoloto and ALROSA with a reference to strategies of global mining companies. Each case study analyzes companies' structure and economic performance and the nature of corporate strategies concerning environmental protection, health and safety and employee relations. Aldanzoloto lacks corporate initiative to disseminate information on environmental protection to the wider public apart from the state authorities.
