ABSTRACT

MRI is a 'big ticket' health technology (Lazaro and Fitch, 1995), requiring considerable capital expenditure with associated long-term revenue costs. Assessment of whether expenditure on the provision of MRI is cost-effective is therefore necessary. This chapter reviews a large subsection of economic literature on MRI - relating to the use of MRI for neurological applications. The review provides an indication of the quality of the economic information available to policy makers should they need to assess whether the use or increased use of MRI upon neurological applications is cost-effective.
