ABSTRACT

China is very keen on East Asian regional integration for two reasons. First, as one of the most dynamic parts of the world economy, East Asia is both of great general economic interest to China and, similarly, of great particular economic interest to the country in order for it to make a win-win case for cooperation as part of the region. Second, in its drive for modernisation, China wants to assure a peaceful neighbourhood so that it can concentrate its attention and resources on economic development. For both purposes, a sort of integration arrangement in the region could be the best solution for the realisation of national reconciliation and shared prosperity, as the European experience has demonstrated.
