ABSTRACT

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), formerly the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB), closely monitors these activities. Nuclear activity in Canada includes nuclear generation stations, research reactor licenses to universities, nuclear research and test establishments, active uranium mines, fuel fabrication plants, and waste management licences. Canada has the richest uranium deposits in the world, and, it is the world's largest producer and exporter of uranium. Information Circular (INFCIRC) 153 is a model safeguards agreement that countries can voluntarily adopt. In order to address the Additional Protocol requirements, the University of Calgary in conjunction with the CNSC has investigated a new approach to nuclear information management and reporting. The new approach is developed based on a Geospatial Information (GIS) System approach.
