ABSTRACT

From Domingo Fernandez Navarrete, Tratados historicos, politicos, ethicos y religiosos de la Monorchia de China, A Spanish Dominican missionary who had served in the Philippines, Friar Domingo Fernandez (de) Navarrete went to China in 1658 and remained there until 1670, when he left for Rome to report on the missions. He had found Macau to be in decline and, though he respected the work of the Jesuits elsewhere, he was a stern critic of both the Jesuits and the Portuguese in Macau and China. In the period when the Ming emperors ruled over China, the people of Macau declared themselves to be their vassals, but the Manchu dynasty holds sway, and they name themselves vassals of the Manchus. Chinese have always lived in Macau, working as artisans and selling the wares of the people of the city. In the latter respect they have been great swindlers and gained all the profit.
