ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the basic question: what is the nature and function of charismatic glossolalia within the context of the British Charismatic movement? In order to answer this question, it proposes to utilize the empirical-theological cycle of Johannes A. van der Ven in which the empirical research methods of the social sciences are integrated into a theological framework. The empirical–theological cycle is a useful heuristic tool for empirical research within a theological framework. Further theological reflection enabled a particular thesis to emerge in terms of constructive theology. The literature review enabled the study to engage with the academic questions and theories concerning glossolalia. In the light of this particular empirical theological understanding, recommendations were made to the Sudley Christian Fellowship regarding its theological praxis. The use of both qualitative and quantitative methods in the research project is unusual for practical and empirical theology in Britain.
