ABSTRACT

This monograph deals with the practice and processes of building in Kievan Russia from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, which represents an important and integral part of the history of medieval Russian culture. Monumental building was, in organizational terms, one of the most complicated aspects of urban craftwork. It follows, therefore, that a study of the construction process can reveal much about the development of technology, as well as about the professional and social organization of the work. Equally, a study of the organization of building work and its construction technology is needed to understand the development of architecture in Kievan Russia.
