ABSTRACT
As a subject of scholarly endeavour, batik has attracted interest since the beginning of the twentieth century. Although the art is often conceived of as a primarily Central Javanese cultural expression, recent studies have begun to highlight the many different guises of batik in other areas of Java and the archipelago. A wide variety of styles and uses are being mapped.
