ABSTRACT

My own research interests are in tourism and in the cross-cultural study of the arts. I have focused particularly those arts created by members of one society which are bought, collected and used by members of another, often called Tourist Arts, and on the dynamic changes of the arts within societies undergoing change, often called Ethnic Arts. Though the subject of this chapter is tourists, textiles and fashion, I shall take a larger view by looking at textiles as markers of high status, identity, and fashion, and at the relation between textiles, clothing and other art forms. Most of my examples are drawn from my research in North America.
