ABSTRACT

A keynote paper addressed problems of usability and made recommendations for the future. It was proposed that various simplified systems of subject organization had failed the user, and that classification in conjunction with new technology, particularly intelligent Online Public Access Catalogue, would help to improve subject retrieval. One major aspect of the work on BC2 was its influence on other systems, both in terms of the theoretical and structural principles underlying the scheme, and the detail and richness of the vocabulary. The use of BC2 schedules and drafts as quarries for designers of other classifications and thesauri seems to be gaining ground. The Classification Research Group (CRG) continued to meet, a highlight being the visit of Eric de Grolier to the meeting on 21 February 1992. The contribution of the CRG to the development of BC2 is testified to in the introduction to the newly revised class for general science and physics, published in 1999.
