ABSTRACT

In October 1998 representatives from the Society of Indexers, the American Society of Indexers, the Australian Society of Indexers and the Indexing and Abstracting Society of Canada came to an agreement regarding international cooperation. This involved them all being in an equal relationship, rather than the overseas associations being separately in a direct relationship with the Society of Indexers. The Society of Indexers' publication Microindexer kept abreast of new developments both in computers and in indexing software. A major interest of research was in the indexing of children's books. Yvonne Dixon had been asked to compile simple indexes to a series for young children, and she sought the views of several publishers and librarians. The indexer contained many summaries of new CD-ROM publications and started a specific section in 1995. Newspapers began to appear as full text on CD-ROM, complete with indexes: the Times from 1990 and the Independent retrospectively to 1988.
