ABSTRACT

The main themes of preservation had remained fairly constant: the need to provide good storage, appropriate environmental conditions, protective enclosures, risk assessment and control, interventive conservation, and a relevant financial and policy regime. The British Library Research and Innovation Centre (BLRIC) funded and managed a number of research projects under its strand Preservation of Library and Archive Materials which had critical impact in preservation. Librarians generally deal with preventive measures. Conservators deal with both preventive and interventive conservation: mutual understanding between the librarian and the conservator is needed. The impact of funding available for preservation and conservation through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) was very significant. From its inception in 1994 the HLF gave many millions of pounds for heritage projects, including the acquisition, preservation and conservation of library materials and the physical improvement of premises. The period saw efforts to define the components of a national preservation strategy.
