10/22 August: Born in village of Sokolko, province of Grodno (in present day Belarus). Mother, Mariya Andreevna Komarovskaya (b.1850), “of noble origin”. Father, son of urban official (meshchanin) of Vologda, school inspector and court counsellor (nadvorny sovetnik). Second of six children: Nikolai Alexandrovich (b.1868); Sergei (b.1876); Maria (b.1881), Anna (b.1883), Olga (b.1884).
