ABSTRACT

The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System (TAAATS), due to be phased into operation during 1998, is to be a fully integrated air traffic management system making use of the latest air navigation technology such as ADS (Automated Dependent Surveillance) and CPDLC (Controller Pilot Datalink Communication). TAAATS will consist of two flight data regions and two major air traffic control centres in Brisbane and Melbourne, five additional terminal control units and nine radar control towers. Thomson CSF was contracted in 1994 to provide hardware and software ATC systems along with an AFTN switching system, voice communication systems, simulators and training support. T AAA TS is to replace an ageing and fragmented system to facilitate Airservices Australia to continue to offer high quality air traffic management into the future in a diverse and very large airspace (Dunstone & Brown, 1994).
