ABSTRACT

This recommendation addressed to the wealthy German banker Philip Eduard Fugger to place his trust in bezoar at all cost, reflects the deep-seated paranoia over poison scandals in early modern Europe. Unless the passage cited above should contain at least a kernel of wisdom, the bezoar stone may be one of the greatest medical frauds perpetrated in history.
