ABSTRACT

Samadhipada consisting of 51 Sutras, deals with the definition and the goal of Yoga, impediments to tranquillity and preliminary ways of achieving total mental stillness. Each Sutra is crafted with the help of selected words and phrases to convey essential elements of a philosophical theory. The first Sutra introduces the reader to the Yoga text by indicating that its focus will be on the study of Yoga and not any other subject. However, the second Sutra is at the core of the entire system because it presents the quintessence of Yoga by offering a preliminary definition as well as its goal. The third Sutra makes it clear that the stilling of the ordinary mind will reap two major benefits for the student of Yoga. The fourth Sutra describes the mental state of all of us who have not yet silenced these fluctuations.
