ABSTRACT

The creation of a new genetic code became an essential element of creating a moderate political culture and society. One of the characteristics of Spanish political culture is the low level of continuous participation in political and civil organisations. Support for European integration became probably one of the most salient features of Spanish political culture up until the crisis. The transformation of political culture in Spain from authoritarianism to democratic moderation and tolerance has been one of the greatest achievements of the new consensual constitution. The control of the whole process of transition by the political elites clearly allowed for an evolutionary establishment of the new democracy. Political mobilisation will always depend on how much citizens are interested in taking part in certain actions. In sum, Spanish political culture is characterised by a vast majority of citizens being only a little interested in politics.
