ABSTRACT

Today, more and more of us in contemporary Western societies are thus in the process of losing, or becoming liberated from (depending on how one looks at it) what might be modernity's last unreflected certainties, the related ideas of natural gender identities and natural sexual orientations.2 To capture the immediate result of this development we can borrow a term from the German weekly Der Spiegel (1996, No.5), which describes the present situation under the heading of "die Verwirrung der Geschlechter" (gender confusion).
