ABSTRACT

In September 1887, August Strindberg (1849-1912) submitted his play The Father. Strindberg sent the play first to Bonniers, who had published several of his previous works, but Bonniers turned it down. He sent it to the Stockholm theaters, but the play was simply returned. Finally, Hans Osterling at Helsingborg published the piece without paying Strindberg a royalty, and the play had its premiere at the Casino Theatre in Copenhagen in November 1887.
