ABSTRACT

One staff attorney involved in the litigation told CNN the airlines 'speak in the abstract about the need for safety and security related to September 11, but nothing they've done in any of these cases advance the need or interest in safety and security5. He hopes the litigation will lead to 'better training of pilots and flight attendants about when there is legitimately a security risk9.2

The intent of this chapter is to help fill the need for training of flight crews in effective and proactive profiling. Your particular airline may already address this issue and this information is not intended to rebut their approach to profiling. If profiling is not addressed, you will find this information usefiil in your daily flying routine. A simple, yet very effective approach is taken with the issue that will be repeated constantly. It is 4absence o f the normal* and ‘presence o f the abnormal? As you will discover, these two premises are applicable to the vast majority of situations, regardless of sex, race, color, religion, or origin. The contentious matters of why we should or should not racially or ethnically profile are not for discussion. We must focus on cues that will aid us in detection of terrorists before committing their deadly acts. For airline personnel, this is the essence of true profiling.
