ABSTRACT

It takes about the same length of time to fly from Heathrow airport near London to JFK airport in New York as it does to drive from London to York. A century ago, the road journey to York would have taken two days. In that time, a traveler can now circumnavigate the globe, and almost every part of it is accessible. There is hardly a recess or corner that has not been exploited in some way by the travel and tourism industry. Even the remaining communist countries are now fair game for the dedicated tourist and for the business traveler seeking opportunities in new territories. Swathes have been cut through jungle, often in the name of eco-tourism, and tourists can now be found in deserts and on mountains alike. Even the Antarctic continent has a tourist trade!
