ABSTRACT

The workplace culture implies modus operandi – it varies with the nature of the operation, and the size of the organisation, be it a small-or medium-sized enterprise or a global plc. It is dependent on how management and workforce interact amongst themselves, within the organisation, and with contractors, clients and the public. Each workplace has its own culture; no two organisations or industries being identical. Thus the culture of a high-street organisation in New York will differ from a similar outlet in London. There is also considerable overlap between the culture of the workplace and the culture within domestic and community environments, all of which impact on the individual employee and the workforce as a whole. Hence, the importance of the local community supplying the workforce. This is of special relevance in the case of alcohol and drugs where they form part of local culture and custom.
