ABSTRACT

The last child – a boy – of George Adams senior and his second wife Ann nee Dudley was born on 27 November 1762, when George was aged fifty-three and his wife Ann forty. He was baptized 'Dudley' at St Dunstan's in the West on 5 December, thereby perpetuating his mother's maiden name. Possibly as a result of the commission to the Emperor of China, on 1794 Dudley was appointed globe maker to his majesty. Meanwhile, on 1791 Dudley took another apprentice, Charles Stewart, son of the late Deputy Governor of Florida, for a premium of £100, paid by the widow. It will be noted that the appointments listed at the beginning of Dudley's advertisement do not include mathematical instrument maker to his majesty. Hannah retained this herself for the time being; the lord chamberlain's books show that it was not relinquished by her and assigned to Dudley Adams until 1796.
