ABSTRACT

This chapter shows particular attention to three likely developments. The first was a renewed attack on partial birth abortions which has occurred, the second a change in the law to allow hospitals to refuse to carry out abortions without losing federal funding and the third was the creation of a new crime, that of the taking a minor across state borders for an abortion. Forcing a woman to have a baby at a young age may militate against the family. The chapter shows a turn round from the situation in the 1970s, when Swedish women used to go to Poland for their abortions. It also shows that abortion cannot be legislated out of existence. What is needed, therefore, is to give women the freedom to choose and to provide the education that enables them to make informed decisions.
