ABSTRACT

The questionnaire probed pilots’ social and economic background. For example, it asked respondents whether they had attended nursery school (that is, pre-school or kindergarten) and to describe their parents’ occupations. This multi-level analysis produced a high-resolution socio-economic profile for each respondent. The profiles are aggregated in Appendix 3: Pilots’ Socio-economic Origins and Motivations. In this study of socio-economic origin, class is defined in terms of occupation (a crude but, in this author’s opinion, tractable definition).1 Examples of working class occupations would be a school caretaker or farm labourer. Examples of middle class occupations would be a teacher or farmer. Examples of upper-middle class occupations would be a bank manager or hospital Registrar.
