ABSTRACT

Organisations are exposed to risk from ‘extreme’ weather events, such as floods, windstorms, heatwaves, cold spells and droughts. The occurrence of an event may have consequences for an organisation, so it will often put in place measures to minimise their impacts. This may include some form of physical protection, the purchase of insurance or the preparation of contingency plans. An organisation may decide to accept a risk, or indeed be unaware of it. Organisations are also – usually implicitly – tuned to the current climate. The type and design of their product or service, the layout of their premises and their assumptions about the availability of resources and raw materials are all influenced by current climate and its variability. With climate change, however, we can no longer assume that the past is a good guide to the future. The climate that we are tuned to has changed, and will change more in the future.
