ABSTRACT

Stepping into the bath with your socks on; struggling to open a friend’s front door with your own latch key; squeezing shaving cream onto your toothbrush; saying ‘thank you’ to a stamp machine; trying to drive away without switching on the ignition; going into the wrong gender toilet; pouring a second kettle onto freshly made tea … the list goes on, but you will have already recognized the species. We have all experienced occasions when our minds have been ‘absent’ from the task in hand so that our words or actions no longer run according to plan.
