ABSTRACT

Measuring the effectiveness of training interventions and the provision of appropriate management is therefore the most important challenge in implementing best training practice. It is also one of the most neglected, both in theory and in practice. The growing complexity of training interventions, and the more diffuse responsibility, is not an excuse for neglect. What is required is a holistic approach based on the concept of a disciplinary framework. If the training manager can develop such a disciplinary framework, he or she will have demonstrated a capability and understanding that will enhance the credibility of the role of the function. However, two other elements have assumed greater importance: these are the wider monitoring/measurement of training activity and the reporting on training activity. This chapter deals with a recommended evaluation system -based on the approach used in an investment bank. It illustrates three figures: the overall design, the end-of-course reactionnaire and the questionnaire used in one-to-one interviews.
