ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is devoted to the historiography, the construction of the physical building and the development of art collections all of which are examined over the entire history of the Royal Institution. It is clear that the buildings of the Royal Institution have always played an important role in how it has developed. The book shows the effect that the necessary financial and legal dealings has had on the running of the Royal Institution throughout its two centuries. An aspect of the treasures of the Royal Institution is the large collection of oil paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs that it has acquired over the years. Much of the early effort of the Royal Institution concentrated on utilitarian work, for instance using chemistry to improve agriculture.
