[736] IN WESTERN RESEARCH, the Qur'ān has had a fate similar to that of ancient Arabic poetry, in the sense that as a document of religious history and as evidence for matters of history and grammatical and linguistic studies, it has been made the object of so vast a literature that it can hardly any longer be comprehended.
