ABSTRACT

The administrative procedure regarding these records, outlined in the Guide to the Public Record Office (Vol. I), is as follows:

Two copies of each annual account, one on paper and one on parchment, were prepared in the Audit Office and sent to the Treasury. Here they were declared before the Lord High Treasurer or Chancellor of the Exchequer and tv/o other Commissioners of the Treasury. Then they were signed and registered at the Treasury in volumes known as 'Declared Accounts1 and 'Auditors States of Accounts1. The paper copy was returned to the Audit Office while the parchment one was sent to the Office of the King's Remembrancer of the Exchequer and enrolled in the series known as 'Enrolments of Public Accounts (Exchequer Q.R.)'. It was then forwarded to the Office of the Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer, where a brief extract of it was entered among the 'States and Views of Public Accounts'. Finally it was forwarded to the Clerk of the Pipe who enrolled an abridgment of it and retained the original. The Pipe Office series (E351) is currently at Chancery Lane and the Audit Office series (A01) is at Kew.
