ABSTRACT

A complex and restrictive set of rules dictates to women how much to cover and not cover. As a result, the very private choice of how much of one's body to show is not personal. Men, without question, are impacted by rules for how much to cover. Women, in most parts of the United States, cover their breasts, even when and where men freely go without shirts. Dress codes in schools have come under recent criticism for telling girls and young women how much of their bodies they must cover. At work, as in high school, women's clothing is monitored for how much of their body is covered. For professional wear, women are often required to wear a female version of the male suit. Despite not understanding the actual complex meaning behind and use of veiling in many cultures across globe, Western society has often been critical of women who wear veils because they are seen as covering "too much".
