ABSTRACT

Multimedia platforms connect people globally and may be used to promote the moral good or to trick unsuspecting victims. There are perils and pitfalls of social media that may be classified as hoaxes, scams, phishing and catfishing. I will offer suggestions as to how we can educate people to avoid and be protected against such hoaxes and scams, even while still maintaining a compassionate disposition towards others with whom one communicates online. I claim that the attitude of critical perspectivism allows the person adopting this attitude to be mindful, ethical, and critically reflective when dealing with multimedia sources of information.
