ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with Athena Mackenzie, who was working on the “Michif Language Recovery Project” as a full-time staff member of the Metis Nation of Alberta, to design a cultural project that would suit both our needs. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the collective efforts in reclaiming the Metis voice and several expressed interest in taking part in future projects. The Metis political leadership at both the provincial and federal levels have been stewarding countless resources to the ongoing quest for full Aboriginal rights recognition for the Metis. The Metis leaders across Canada continue their advocacy for full rights recognition with the governing party; however, there is very little education focused on the Metis people of Canada taking place at the federal level or beyond. As a visionary leader from the Fishing Lake community who works at a provincial level, Ryck Chalifoux continues to make significant strides for the Metis towards the goal of self-determination.
