ABSTRACT
This chapter builds on the preanesthetic medication drugs discussed in Chapter 3 and describes the IV anesthetic drugs used for induction of anesthesia and endotracheal intubation prior to inhalant anesthesia maintenance ( Fig. 4.1 ). The chapter also covers the use of IV agents for short-term anesthesia maintenance. IV injection techniques are also described and the characteristics of each injectable anesthetic drug or drug combination are outlined. IV injectable combinations using medetomidine and dexmedetomidine are discussed in Chapter 9.
