ABSTRACT

All materials are made from tiny molecules packed together. If they are packed together very tightly, they are more dense than a material that is less tightly packed. Air is a mixture of gases. Molecules of gases are very spread out so they are not very dense at all. If we push the doll down towards the treasure explaining that Traction Man wants to retrieve the treasure from the bottom. Different ways are discussed to help Traction Man get to the bottom. The heaviest part will end up lowest in the water so a heavy diving helmet would hold the doll upside down. The children were shown some of the available materials that Traction Man could wrap around Scrubbing Brush. The important skills here are exploring the materials and being creative. There is no right or wrong answer. Give the children time to play and come up with things they could make for Traction Man.
