ABSTRACT

In my capacity as coordinator, I observed as many of the testing sessions as possible to check to see that the tests were being properly administered. I noticed that a number of children had puzzled looks on their faces as they worked through the test. After a number of testing sessions, I asked a sample of children individually to describe the meanings of the faces. Not one child identified the middle face as the "so-so face." Almost all just shrugged, some seemed embarrassed, and many said, "I don't know." However, one little boy said with great confidence, "That's the cool face." Now, as everyone in my generation knows, it's hip to be cool but it's not hip to be so-so.
