ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the importance of understanding brain development and architecture, windows of opportunities and information processing, learning, perception, attention, intelligence and comprehension throughout childhood. Constructivist theories and information processing theory are presented. Higher mental processes include executive functions, memory, categorizing, problem-solving, mathematics and the scientific method, reasoning, planning and reflection, metacognition, and the importance of creativity and the arts.
