ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes few moments in his career as exciting as getting that first call from a dean's search committee chair. A cost-benefit analysis comparing the video conference with the airport interview would pretty much eliminate the airport interview forever, but airport interviews are used, and in the search for a dean's spot one must be ready for about anything. During the campus interview, candidates can expect some version of the same questions they were asked during the phone interview. The configuration of interviews candidates encounter during a campus visit varies from institution to institution. There are, however, some core players that candidates should expect to meet sometime during their interview. The provost will most likely interview the candidate the first day and then might take her/him to dinner or lunch one of the days thereafter. The provost can have a significant effect on a dean's life.
