ABSTRACT

A dean's success, while dependent largely on fulfilling the expectations of their role, is also dependent upon the unique qualifications of the dean. A dean's agenda can be built upon an inherited strategic plan, or it can be generated out of a new college strategic plan, the creation of which is led by the dean. Many university leaders worked to diversify university campuses in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time this meant encouraging hiring and retaining faculty members from diverse backgrounds, and recruiting diverse students as well. The importance of diversity cannot be emphasized enough—within the faculty in terms of cultural identities, but especially within the university's curricula. The magnitude of the responsibility of changing a core curriculum is such that one must be prepared to use all of the skills and tools known to humans in order to be successful.
