ABSTRACT

International Maritime Organization was developed by the Convention of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) at the Maritime Conference of the United Nations in Geneva 1948. In 1982 IMCO changed its name to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)1. [1]

The organization now operates as the official organization and specialized agency of the United Nations, based in London. Although established primarily with the task of taking care of the technical aspects of maritime affairs of importance for the safety of maritime navigation, over time, expands its activities in the area of sea protection from pollution, and now takes care of all aspects of harmonization of international maritime activities (among other, maritime security and climate change).
