ABSTRACT

In addition, the researchers found that some of the parents misunderstood or only partially understood the random process as it applied to their babies' treatment. For example, some parents thought that the treatment decision was deliberately made by physicians based on what the physicians thought was to be best for their babies. Some parents whose babies received ECMO thought that they had chosen it when, in reality, their babies had been assigned at random to the treatment. Still others were concerned or angry that randomization was used to determine treatment.
