ABSTRACT
Most researchers systematically use the empirical approach to acquire knowledge. When they do, we say that they are engaging in empirical research. A major distinction between empirical research and everyday observation is that empirical research is planned in advance. Based on a theory or hunch, researchers develop research questions and then plan whom, how, when, and under what circumstances to observe in order to answer the questions.2
