T H E M E A S U R E O F A M A N W hen th e m an in th e m idd le looks a t h im self in a curved m irro r h e sees w hat he rega rd s as a d is to r te d im age. T he im age on th e r ig h t is th in n e r and seem s ta lle r because i t is re flected from a cy lind rica l su rfac e se t u p rig h t. T he im age on th e le f t is sh o rte r and seem s b ro ad er because i t is re flected from a cy lind rica l su rface set horizontally . B u t if th e m an and his im age are m easured by scales in th e real w orld and th e m irro r world th ey come ou t th e sam e. So, too , i t would be im possible fo r us to find ou t if ev e ry th in g in th e world Avere expanded or con tracted in all d irections. In o th er words, all m easu rem en ts are re la tiv e . A cco rd in g to E in ste in any body in m ovem ent is sho rtened in th e d irection of th e line of m otion w hile th e tran sv e rse d im ension rem ains th e same. I f , th e n , a m an is being ca rried head lo n g th ro u g h space w ith a velocity ap p ro ach ­ing th e speed of lig h t he would be sho rtened like th e m an on th e le ft. I f he were m oving sidew ays h e would be like th e m an on th e righ t.T he m an ’s im age in a p lane m irro r seem s to h im sym m etrical b u t reversed . H is r ig h t h an d h as som e­how go t over on his le ft side an d vice versa. Such a tran sfo rm atio n as th e m irro r seem s to effect can n o t be ac tu a lly accom plished in o rd in ary space, b u t would conceivably be possible in a space of fo u r d im ensions.
